Grand Canyon South Rim Rafting With Kids

Erik M.

Did you know there’s a fantastic Grand Canyon South Rim rafting trip that is open to kids four years of age and older?

This day trip starts from South Rim and go to Page, AZ, where the pontoon boats are docked at the base of Glen Canyon Dam.

There are no rapids on this trip. This is why it’s categorized a smooth-water float trip, and that’s why kids are welcome.

The standard version of this tour includes bus transportation to and from the Colorado River. The deluxe version comes with an airplane flight to the dam and an off road Jeep tour to Antelope Valley.

The float trip is 15.1 miles. The first major highlight is Horseshoe Bend, a landmark made famous by how its sandstone cliffs contrast with the river’s turquoise waters.

Downstream, the river pilot will pull out on a sandy beach for a quick hike to a series of ancient petroglyphs (rock art). Now’s also a great time to get in the water.

The float ride ends at historic Lee’s Ferry, the only major crossing between the North Rim and the South Rim for miles. Still standing is an old fort and a trading post. It’s here where the multi-day whitewater rafting trips start.

The standard and the deluxe versions of this trip conclude with a bus ride back to the South Rim. These are state-of-the-art motor coaches and they come with comfy seats, ice-cold A/C, and lots of personal space.

Sights to be seen during the bus ride are:

  • Navajo Indian Reservation
  • Painted Desert
  • East Rim
  • Pristine high desert

Rafting Necessities

  • Brimmed hat
  • Dry bag (usually provided)
  • Dry set of clothes

  • Long-sleeved shirt
  • ChapStick

  • [...] Smooth water trips are a great way for families and groups to enjoy the Grand Canyon together. Kids as young as 4 years old can participate. These trips are all-day affairs, so make sure to plan accordingly. I strongly recommend booking your tour in advance because these tours fly off the shelves during the summer. Lastly, do a price check on the Internet. It’s on the Web where you’ll find the best deals – just make sure you complete your transaction online in order to qualify for that special promotion. [...]
